About Applied Golf Management Studies, BA (Hons) - at University of Birmingham

During the programme you study using a range of teaching methods (workshops and seminars, for example) and assessments (essays, exams and presentations); and you are taught in the specialist facilities at the University and at the PGA National Training Academy based at the DeVere Belfry. You are taught by specialist staff from a number of schools across the University as well as PGA specialist staff.

Across all three years of the degree you cover modules in the areas of applied sports science, materials science, coaching theory and business management delivered by specialist staff from the University and the PGA. You also complete three PGA-assessed vocational placements in a golf environment, which count towards PGA Professional Status.

First year

In the first year you cover a generic approach to sport and golf, including sports science, equipment technology, coach education and business management. During the summer vacation you also complete a placement in collaboration with the PGA.

Second and third years

You cover more applied modules including Golf Psychology, Swing Theory, Sports Science (Physiotherapy), Event Management, Business Finance and Human Resource Management. There are also two further placements-one in the summer vacation of the second year and one at the end of the third year.

Career opportunities

It is hoped that the degree will produce highly qualified golf professionals who will be able to influence and promote the game throughout the world. It is intended that successful students will find employment as PGA-qualified professionals, in the development of new materials and equipment, in event, tour and facility management, and in sports science support.

Current graduates have gone on to study for higher degrees and have found employment in a variety of golf facilities around the UK as well as other parts of the world. (Download pdf brochure for further information)
