Study

Crime/thriller fiction is the most popular literary genre in the world, with UEA at the forefront of both its critical and creative study. This Master's gives students a window to create a full-length novel under the guidance of award-winning crime writers and experienced creative writing tutors - without having to relocate or give up their day job. Delivered over two years via a specifically designed distance learning online platform, and three short residential periods per year, in September, January and May. Students can stay at UEA's on-campus hotel.

Structure

Creative Writing will be supplemented with the critical study of landmark crime texts, while addressing other aspects such as characterisation, place, plot, and suspense. Residential periods incorporate creative and critical workshops and seminars, a masterclass from a leading crime writer, plus visits from literary agents and editors of crime fiction. Modules delivered by distance learning include tutor and student lead group presentations, discussions, workshopping, and one-on-one Skype tutorials.

Teaching

UEA is a founding partner in 'Noirwich': Norwich's annual Crime Writing Festival, which takes place in September to coincide with the student's residential period. UEA offers exceptional links with leading crime writers, critics, publishers and agents, whose expertise is at your disposal.

Employability

Students can go on to publish with a major house, or work with smaller, more specialist publishers. Some graduates undertake further postgraduate study, or return to their original discipline (teaching, journalism, law). Students also have the opportunity to meet some of the UK's leading agents, publishers and crime writers who are linked to this genre of writing as a career.
