Course Overview

The Classical Studies part of the programme will offer students the opportunity to explore their interest in the cultures, literatures and languages of the ancient world, then this is the programme for you. A degree in Classical Studies gives you the opportunity to study a wide range of modules from mythology to religion and all genres of ancient literature, such as epic, tragedy, comedy and satire. Modules exploring the influence of the ancient world on modern popular culture, such as film and literature, are also available. Study of ancient language is an option but not compulsory. In the first year, modules can be taken on a wide range of periods and themes; in the second and third years, the School offers specialised modules on all aspects of Greco-Roman literature and culture so that you can gain in-depth knowledge in areas of particular interest to you.

With Creative Writing, the programme will offer students the opportunity to explore their creative talent across a range of different forms - including short stories, screenplays, poetry, drama and novels - and will give you the opportunity to pursue your interests in a number of genres such as the Gothic, the thriller/crime, the satiric and the romantic. Alongside the form and genre options, you will take modules in research and archiving, following which you will create a major piece of work which may lead to publication.

Throughout your three years, you will have regular contact with, and support from, a range of different writers, supported by other internationally renowned poets, playwrights, script writers and novelists. Weekly workshop sessions will be held within which you will be encouraged to discuss your work with your community of fellow writers, and during the course of your studies, you will receive input on how best to prepare your work for the marketplace. Alongside this one-to-one tuition, you will also take courses on writing for the workplace, including sessions on reviewing, editing and writing to brief.

A degree in Classical Studies and Creative writing gives you the opportunity to study a wide range of modules from mythology to poetry, from ancient Greek including all genres of ancient literature, such as epic, tragedy, comedy and satire to aspects and techniques for publishing.

In the first year, modules can be taken on a wide range of periods and themes; in the second and third years, we offer specialised modules so that you can gain in-depth knowledge in areas of particular interest to you.

Options are also available to study selected modules in the wider Faculty of Humanities, for example in Theology, Chinese History, English and Philosophy.

All students have the opportunity to pursue their own interests and conduct their own research in the second-year independent project and the third-year dissertation.

A wide range of assessment methods used on the course, such as essays, gobbets, slide presentations, examinations and bibliographic exercises, so that the assessment reflects the student's performance as a whole.

There is a strong sense of community among our students and staff, where you will always be part of the vibrant Faculty .

The classes are always friendly and never intimidating, allowing staff to get to know you on a first name basis. Our tutors support very active student-led societies, which have organised movie nights and theatre trips and put on plays themselves.
