About Applied Translation Studies (Part time), MA - at University of East Anglia (UEA)

Study

This MA is designed as an academic qualification for prospective or practising professional translators, with UEA being home to the British Centre for Literary Translation. The course allows you to apply the theory of translation in a wide range of practical ways, offering opportunities to expand your experience in preparation for a move to become a professional translator. Students from across the globe are welcomed to this degree, making seminars a chance to engage staff and students with each other's languages and cultures.

Structure

You will develop an individual portfolio of your own translations in consultation with a professional translator, experience working on practical group projects in a real working environment and be trained in the application and use of the latest technological tools for translators. Students take a combination of compulsory and optional modules, building a solid foundation in the discipline ready to specialise in module areas of particular interest. Assessment is on the basis of coursework presentations, translations, commentaries, essays and final dissertation.

Teaching

This Master's course focuses on the increasingly important areas of contemporary Intercultural Communication and Applied Translation, delivered with a high level of contact time, and you will find yourself working with students who have different language pairs to you which leads to fascinating cross-cultural exchanges. You will have access to extensive resources to support your studies, namely the James Platt Language Centre.

Employability

Students often enter the translation industry, but others will pursue related professions with their transferable skills taken from this degree. You'll offer employers a high level of theoretical and practical knowledge of applied translation, expert evaluation of critical approaches, plus a refined ability to read and utilise research literature and participate effectively in written and oral debates. This MA degree also provides a platform for further postgraduate research in Translation Studies.
