Course overview

The Bachelor’s degree offers an in-depth encounter with Italian language, tradition, and cultural heritage. Focusing on the centuries when Italy led Western art and literature, i.e. the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, it adopts a cross-disciplinary approach combining the study of texts, images, music, and performative arts. Strong theoretical courses are combined with interactive workshops in libraries, museums, and cultural institutions, for an on-site exploration of Italian culture.

Programme structure

1st Year: Contemporary Italian Language, Language Structures, Language Variations and Usages, Italian Language in the Middle Ages, Italian Literature in the Middle Ages, Italy in the Middle Ages, Making Art in Medieval Italy, Universities and the Spread of Secular Learning, Written Sources and Documentary Practices, Illuminated Manuscripts and Scriptoria.

2nd Year: Italian Language through History and across the World, Italian Language in the Renaissance, Latin for Beginners, Italian Literature in the Renaissance, Early Modern and Renaissance Italy, Making Art in Renaissance Italy, The Early Modern Court: Pageants, Music, Art and Theatre, The Early Printed Book and the Printing Press, Renaissance Music and Polyphonic Practice

3rd Year: Academic Writing in Italian, Latin Literature, Ancient Greek for Beginners, The Survival of the Classical Heritage in Renaissance Italy, Medieval and Early Modern Libraries: the History of Reading, Disseminating and Communicating Italian Culture, Between East and West: From Byzantium to Renaissance Italy.

Please note that the first 3 semesters of the programme are taught in English and the following 3 are taught in Italian.

Career opportunities

Graduates work in the field of dissemination of the Italian language, tradition, and cultural heritage. They may teach Italian as a foreign language, hold positions at Italian cultural institutes in Italy and abroad, work in museums, libraries, and tourism organisations related to Italian culture.
