About Accounting, BSc (Hons) - at University College Cork (UCC)

Overview

The objective of the BSc Accounting degree is to provide a broad business education and produce graduates who have skills for critical thinking, problem-solving, independent learning and all within an informed ethical framework.

While there is an emphasis on accounting, other areas such as business information systems, economics, finance, law, management, marketing, psychology, statistics and taxation are also covered.

Students are not expected to have any knowledge of business when commencing the BSc Accounting degree. All subjects are taught from a foundation level. The first two years of the course focus on the fundamental aspects of each business discipline. In Years 3 and 4, coverage of materials is at a more advanced level. Year 3 also includes a paid six-month work placement, which is organised by UCC.

Costs: Full-time EU/EEA/Swiss State undergraduate students may be exempt from paying tuition fees. The State will pay the tuition fees for students who satisfy the Free Fees Criteria. In 2016/17 the Student Contribution Charge will be EUR 3,000 and the Capitation Fee will be EUR 165.

2017 Entry Requirements: H5 in two subjects, and O6/H7 in four other subjects in the Leaving Certificate from Irish, English, another language, Mathematics and two other subjects recognised for entry purposes.

Course Practicalities

Expected lecture hours:12 lecture hours per week. Lectures may be further supplemented by tutorials and computer practicals.

Assessment

Written exams will take place at both the end of Semester 1 and at the end of Semester 2. Some modules will not have formal end of term written examinations. These modules use other types of assessment and may be examined wholly on continuous assessment.

These typically require students to complete tasks such as a project, essay, presentation or an in-class written test.

EU Applicants: Application to Year 1 of the degree programme is made directly through the Central Applications Office (CAO). Applicants should apply online at www.cao.ie. The normal closing date for receipt of completed applications is 1st February of the year of proposed entry.

Non-EU Applicants

Mature Applicants: Application is made through the CAO and the closing date for the receipt of completed applications is 1st February in the year of proposed entry.
