Course overview

Overview

Applied Mathematics is the application of mathematics to the modelling and solving of practical, real-world problems. The emphasis throughout this three-year course is on developing andenhancing problem-solving skills.

Areas of applied mathematics taught on the course include:

  • aspects of more classical applied mathematics in the form of elements of mechanics
  • mathematical modelling methods and techniques
  • computer programming language and use of modern sophisticated symbolic software
  • numerical experimentation
  • general mathematical methods
  • elements of the modern areas of chaos and dynamical systems.

The first-year course assumes no previous knowledge of applied mathematics and extensive tutorialsupport is available throughout.

Course Details

Year 1 Modules (All 5 Credits):

AM1052Introduction to Mechanics;

AM1053Introduction to Mathematical Modelling;

AM1054Mathematical Software

Note: Students taking Applied Mathematics in First Arts must also take Mathematics MA1055

Year 2 Modules:

Engineering Mechanics with Transform Methods; Mathematical Modelling; C/C++ Programming with Applications; Fourier Methods; Mathematical Experimentation & Chaos

Year 3*/4 Modules:

Computer Modelling & Numerical Techniques; Vector & Tensor Methods; Optimisation & the Calculus of Variations; Partial Differentiatial Equations with Applications;

Applied Mathematics Literature Review

*BA International students spend Third Year studying in an approved foreign University in a country of the student's major language or subject. They will return to complete their final year in UCC in Year 4.

See the College Calendar for more detailed information on the programme and the Book of Modules for Applied Mathematics for further details.

Course Practicalities

Year 1: Three 5-credit modules in Applied Mathematics corresponds toa workload of about 7 lecture hours and 3 hours of tutorials or computer laboratory per week.

Years 2 and 3:Six 5-credit modules per year. Most modules consist of two lectures per week, together with associated homework that is discussed in tutorials.

Modules in applied mathematics that involve significant use of the computer have associated laboratory practicals. The School of Mathematical Sciences has dedicated, well-equipped computerlaboratories for this purpose.

Assessment

Written exams will take place before Christmas and in May. Not all modules will have formal examinations. Many modules use other types of assessment.

Application Procedure

Refer to CK101and CK108.
