Course overview

This course provides graduates with the professional skills to work in the media industries, in areas such as feature journalism or public relations. You learn to research, write for different audiences and work individually and in teams. It builds your knowledge and understanding of the cultural, political and economic role of the media in contemporary society. You develop an awareness of various types of media and the similarities and differences between them. For example, you gain knowledge of more traditional media, such as print or broadcast, as well as understanding newer, convergent forms. You study the core media institutions and learn about the key approaches for analysing media texts. You also examine the general characteristics of media industries, such as the trend towards conglomeration and convergence. The industries include broadcasting film the internet print and electronic publishing video and computer games advertising marketing We offer you opportunities to develop skills in * professional media communication * journalism * public relations. As part of the course, you also gain work experience in a professional setting. Past work placements have included * the BBC * regional newspapers * PR and advertising agencies * the voluntary sector. You improve your academic, social and expressive skills as part of your personal, intellectual and career development. Also, you increase your ability to learn independently and to evaluate your own learning and performance.
