Course overview
IT systems are constantly evolving with changing and emerging technology. This provides a challenging environment for the computer and network engineer, who must adapt to these changes.
Computers and computer networks are the most important part of many devices, ranging from embedded computers in cars, lifts and personal stereos to the vast number of computers that make up the internet. They are also essential to the operation of many organisations.
This course produces graduates able to adapt to the changing computer and networking needs of industrial and commercial organisations, while working to a high professional and ethical standard.
It gives you a foundation in computer engineering, electronics and data communications. You also gain specialist knowledge and technical ability in network engineering. These skills equip you for a career in a wide range of computer engineering, IT, computer networking and related fields.
You learn to design, install, maintain and monitor computers and computer networks for many areas of industry and commerce. In our specialist laboratories, you design and install a computer network for various applications, using current computer and networking technology.
The vocational nature of this course provides a realistic project-based learning environment, and you can experience an extended period of training in an organisation. This is excellent preparation for a career in areas such as IT, engineering and management.
Specialist facilities
These include
* a dedicated network laboratory where you research and investigate virtual computer networks. You then configure your design in the laboratory to test in the real world.
* a multimedia laboratory where network performance issues for multimedia application are investigated
* an electronics and communications laboratory where low level system performance may be examined, such as packet loss, bit error rate or quality of service
The laboratories provide you with the practical skills to specify the hardware and software for a system and consider other issues such as security, communication media and managing a network.
You work in our networking labs studying information engineering, computer networks, computer communications and multimedia networks.
