More Than a Screen: Belonging in an Online Student Community

Studying online doesn’t have to mean studying alone. In fact, one of the greatest strengths of online education is the ability to connect with students from all over the world — people with different perspectives, experiences, and goals. Building a sense of community in a virtual environment takes a bit of initiative, but the rewards are immense: richer learning, stronger motivation, and meaningful friendships. Here are some practical ways to create connection and collaboration in your online learning journey.

Engage in discussion forums

Online discussion boards are where most conversations begin. Participate actively by sharing your thoughts, asking questions, and responding thoughtfully to others. These exchanges encourage deeper learning and help you connect with classmates on a personal and academic level. The more you contribute, the more rewarding the experience becomes.

Join or create study groups

Collaborating with others through virtual study groups is a great way to stay motivated and accountable. Platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams make it easy to meet, review course materials, and support one another. If your course doesn’t have a study group, take the initiative to start one — many of your peers will be eager to join.

Use social media and messaging apps

Many online programmes have unofficial WhatsApp, Slack, or Discord groups where students interact informally. These channels provide space for sharing resources, celebrating achievements, and forming friendships beyond the classroom. Social platforms help recreate the casual connections that happen naturally on a physical campus.

Attend live sessions and events

Live lectures, webinars, and networking sessions offer valuable opportunities to engage in real time. Turn your camera on, introduce yourself, and contribute to discussions — it helps others remember and connect with you. Regular participation in these events fosters familiarity and builds confidence in virtual interactions.

Collaborate on projects

Working on team assignments is one of the most effective ways to bond with classmates. Collaboration not only strengthens teamwork and communication skills but also exposes you to new perspectives from around the world. Shared goals often lead to lasting professional and personal connections.

Be proactive and supportive

Community grows when individuals show kindness and initiative. Reach out to classmates, offer encouragement, and acknowledge their achievements. Small gestures — like a supportive message or helpful tip — can make a big difference in creating an inclusive, uplifting environment.

Tips from our academics and students

Adam Simcock (Programme Leader, iQTS)

“Setting aside dedicated time for your studies is key to success in online learning. Create a study routine by blocking out regular slots in your calendar or planning specific times for independent study. You can use digital tools like reminder apps or calendar alerts to stay on track, equally you can use a paper calendar and diary. Share your study plans with family and friends, just as you might share a marathon training schedule. This helps them understand your commitments and support you in achieving your goals. Remember, balance study with breaks to stay motivated and maximise your focus.”

Olga Kazarina (iPGCE graduate)

‘’There are ways to stay connected and make the most of your learning experience. Going out to study at a coffee shop can be a great way to meet like-minded individuals. You can also engage with others through professional learning networks like LinkedIn. Don’t forget to get in touch with your peers or even start a study group at your workplace!

To stay on track and avoid feeling overwhelmed, establish a regular routine and break down your study tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. This approach can help you maintain focus, make steady progress, and ultimately achieve your learning goals. Additionally, leverage the power of AI tools for research, writing assistance, and personalized learning support.

Having an accountability buddy can also be a great way to stay motivated and on track. By sharing your goals and progress with someone else, you’re more likely to follow through and succeed.”

Gain professional connections and networking globally

Developing professional connections and building your network is one of the most powerful advantages of online learning. Your classmates, instructors, and guest speakers come from a wide range of professional backgrounds, making every interaction a potential doorway to new insights and opportunities. By engaging thoughtfully in discussions, participating in live sessions, and connecting on platforms like LinkedIn, you can cultivate relationships that extend far beyond the classroom.

These connections can lead to mentorships, collaborations, and even future career prospects — turning your online learning experience into a meaningful step toward your professional goals.

Creating your community in an online learning environment doesn’t happen by accident — it happens through small, intentional steps that invite connection. Whether you’re joining discussions, collaborating on projects, or simply offering support to a classmate, each interaction strengthens the sense of belonging that makes online education truly meaningful. When you show up, engage, and reach out, you’re not just completing a course — you’re becoming part of a global network of learners growing together.
