Umeå University Tops International Student Satisfaction Rankings

Umeå University has emerged as a global leader in international student satisfaction, achieving top honours in the International Student Barometer (ISB) survey for the autumn semester of 2023. The survey, conducted by the International Graduate Insight Group (i-graduate), saw responses from over 121,000 students representing 137 universities worldwide, placing Umeå University first in key categories such as living, support, and overall satisfaction.

A Global Leader in Campus Life and Student Experience

International students rated Umeå University as the best globally for campus buildings, sports facilities, and social activities, reflecting the vibrant and inclusive environment the university provides. The institution also secured first place for affordability, including accommodation and living costs, and was rated the best globally for making friends within their home country.

The accolades extend beyond physical amenities. Umeå University was ranked number one in Sweden for various support services, including libraries, student health services, and study counselling. Its International Office and Housing Office also received top marks nationally and ranked among the best globally.

“Our international students are integral to our vibrant academic community,” said Professor Cathrine Norberg, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University. “Their feedback drives continuous improvement, and we are thrilled to see their positive evaluations.”

Excellence in Learning and Career Preparation

Umeå University’s commitment to academic excellence was also evident in the ISB results. The university was ranked first in Sweden for learning spaces and physical library facilities and secured top positions globally for language support and learning technology. In Europe, it claimed the top spot for career goal preparation, highlighting its focus on equipping students with skills for future success.

Overall Happiness and Recommendation

The survey also revealed that Umeå University achieved the highest global marks for overall happiness, with 86.2% of international students recommending the university to friends and family—the highest score among Swedish universities and fifth in Europe. This endorsement underscores the university’s dedication to creating a welcoming and enriching environment for students from diverse backgrounds.

With a remarkable 62% response rate among its international students, Umeå University demonstrated its commitment to listening to student voices and continuously improving their experience. The survey results showcase the institution’s dedication to fostering a supportive, inclusive, and innovative environment for its students.
