Sweden’s first certified Healthy Campus: A university where well-being shapes success
Choosing a university is not only about academics. For many international students, it is about finding a place where you can develop, feel supported and enjoy your life while you study. Umeå University, located in northern Sweden’s lively student city, stands out as a place where all of that is possible. It is the first higher education institution in Sweden and the entire Nordic region to be certified as a Healthy Campus, a recognition that reflects its strong commitment to student and staff well-being.
This achievement reflects Umeå University’s broader commitment to sustainability and is built on a collective mission, recognising that a healthy campus environment gives students the strongest foundation for success.

A global certification focused on well-being
The Healthy Campus certification was created by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to help universities around the world strengthen health and well-being on campus. More than 130 institutions are part of the programme. Umeå University joined in March 2023 and reached gold level by the end of the year, which is the second highest distinction.
“It is gratifying that Umeå University is certified so high already in the first year. It strengthens our attractiveness as a university and workplace and also shows that issues of physical activity, health and well-being are a prerequisite of a sustainable work and study environment,” says Hans Wiklund, University Director.
FISU launched the Healthy Campus programme in 2020 to help universities build a culture where health is part of everyday life. The initiative supports the goals of Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, and it highlights Umeå University’s dedication to global sustainability.

What makes a Healthy Campus
To earn the FISU certification, universities are assessed against 100 criteria across seven key areas:
- Physical activity and sport
- Diet
- Mental and social health
- Disease prevention
- Risk behaviour
- Social responsibility and sustainability
- Sustainable governance and leadership
A model for other universities
Umeå University’s work has already gained international attention. Several of its initiatives have been highlighted by FISU as strong examples that can inspire other universities. These include:
- Health on Campus, a biannual event that brings the whole university together to promote physical activity and wellness
- The Buddy Programme, which helps international students build friendships and feel at home from their first week
- The Student Health Service’s mental well-being initiatives
- The campus outdoor environment, designed to encourage movement, recreation and social connection

Why this matters for international students
For students planning to study abroad, Umeå University offers more than excellent teaching, modern facilities and cutting-edge research. It offers a community that puts your well-being at the centre of your experience. A Healthy Campus is not just a label. It is a commitment to helping you learn, grow and live well throughout your studies.
