Course overview

Within a bright and welcoming workshop students develop the holistic skills necessary

to become professional conservators. Theory and practice are integrated, ensuring students

develop critical awareness of conservation issues plus a rich understanding of this

specialist discipline within conservation.

A broad range of objects is provided from public and private collections, and students enjoy working with other departments on joint projects. A variety of contexts is explored; from archaeological finds to decorative arts objects from a range of cultures and stylistic periods. Conservation options and strategies and a full range of materials and techniques are considered. You will benefit from the input of visiting expert lecturers, external visits and can engage in outreach events and client liaison to support the development of business and communication skills.

Each student has their own workbench, access to a well-equipped analytical lab and a pottery for weekly

evening sessions on new-making. Students have undertaken work placements in prestigious institutions such as The British Museum, The V&A, The Ashmolean Museum, The Metropolitan Museum, Cliveden Conservation, and Plowden and Smith Ltd. Graduates have an excellent employment record.
