Course Overview
The course is suitable for
- professionals with a first degree who wish to use Chinese in a professional context
- students who are interested in a career in or involving China and thus want to learn Chinese
- graduates who would like to do postgraduate study in a China-related area but so far lack the necessary language skills
- students on a gap year who would like to learn Chinese before embarking on a degree course or enter work
The programme is aimed at students with no prior knowledge of Mandarin or with a level of Mandarin up to HSK Level 4. Entry points are Basic Chinese 1 or Intermediate Chinese 1.

Delivery of the programme is organised in three academic terms: Term 1 runs from September to December, Term 2 from January to March, and Term 3 from April to June. Each term consists of 10 teaching weeks during which a student will study 20 credits of Mandarin at the appropriate level. Students will meet twice a week for two 2-hour sessions (total of 4 hours/week) over the course of the term.
In addition, they have to attend three intensive workshop sessions per term, roughly one in each month. These workshops will take place on Saturday mornings (9:00-13:00). Thus, students will have a minimum of 50 language contact hours per term. Like all students on our undergraduate programmes, students on the Certificate programme will be supported through tutorial sessions through our online learning platform "Moodle".
