About Chinese Civilisation and English, BA - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

Chinese Civilisation

China is one of the world's great civilisations with a rich cultural heritage providing the backdrop to a dynamic contemporary society. The Lampeter programme in Chinese Civilisation aims to broadly familiarise students with Chinese history and culture in its various manifestations across the entire span of China's pre-modern and modern history.

This programme is designed for students who wish to study China without having to go through our Mandarin language programme which aims at fluency in Chinese. However, you will still have the opportunity to acquire basic competence in Mandarin by choosing the introductory Basic Chinese 1 module in the first semester and by taking further Mandarin classes in the Confucius Institute.

English

English is a dynamic and diverse subject, ranging from the bloody revenge dramas of the Renaissance to contemporary blockbusters, from the realist novels of the 19th century to the latest developments on the World Wide Web. This degree combines a commitment to the large historical picture of English studies (from Beowulf to Tom Wolfe) with a responsiveness to new directions and concerns of the subject precipitated by developments in critical and cultural theory.

Designed to offer a challenging and enjoyable intellectual experience, it also provides a foundation for a host of different careers, fostering and developing many of the skills necessary for the modern workplace.
