Applied Mathematics, endless applications
Mathematics plays a vital role in many areas of society. In the past, mathematics was mainly used to solve engineering and physics-related problems, but nowadays we can do much more with it. For instance, mathematics is used to solve social issues, like healthcare logistics. The great thing is that the possibilities for applying mathematics are endless.
Mathematical models for practical problems
In the Bachelor's programme Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente you will learn how to make use of mathematical instruments in the engineering and medical worlds, in banking and insurance, in the environment and in traffic. By simplifying practical problems and planning mathematical models based on them, you will reformulate these problems in such a way that they become mathematically solvable. Based on these models, you will make calculations, simulate the situation and compare the outcomes with reality. Computers are indispensable in this field, of course. Because you will often look beyond the boundaries of your own discipline as an Applied Mathematics student, you will acquire an understanding of many areas in which mathematics are applied. This is why subjects like Industrial Engineering and Management, Applied Physics and Technical Computer Science will make up a large part of your programme.
