Course overview
The objectives of the graduate diploma of engineering science are to: enable students, who hold appropriate three or four year engineering qualifications or equivalent in the relevant specialisation (major field), to complete a postgraduate program that will lead to an advanced theoretical and technical knowledge in an engineering discipline; enable students who hold appropriate four year engineering qualifications or equivalent in a particular specialisation (major field) to change to another area of specialisation by completing a postgraduate program that will lead to an advanced theoretical and technical level of knowledge in an engineering discipline. Through this eight unit degree, students will do a combination of advanced study and practice of environmental engineering, empowering them to apply engineering solutions to environmental problems. This major is unique because it focuses on the sustainable management of australia's vital soil and water resources. When students complete their graduate diploma of engineering science they could take the credit from their studies and go on to complete the master of engineering science where students will have the opportunity to do a research project and dissertation to apply their formal knowledge to a real world issue. Environmental engineering at USQ provides students with the knowledge and skills to be an 'environmental problem-solver'. Students would work in water and wastewater treatment, river hydrology, soil conservation, irrigation, salinisation, drainage, mine site rehabilitation, environmental studies, water resources engineering, soil science, engineering problem solving and management. This degree provides a pathway to the master of engineering science which is provisionally accredited with engineers Australia for membership as a graduate professional engineer.
