Course overview

  • The EPSRC and MOD CDT in Complex Integrated Systems for Defence & Security (CISDnS) is a PhD training programme with the aim to:
  • Address the significant skills shortage in the D&S Sector at a doctoral level.
  • Train students from a diverse range of backgrounds career histories and scientific disciplines.
  • Tackle research and innovation challenges relevant to the D&S sector taking a systems-based approach.

The CISDnS CDT offers the opportunity to pursue doctoral level training, either full time or part time, through an integrated PhD (iPhD) or Engineering Doctorate (EngD), across a range of disciplines captured by the themes of Digital, Physical and Biological Systems.
The CDT will support projects across the breadth of the MOD science and technology portfolio. The centre's research is multi and cross disciplinary by design, extending beyond engineering and physical sciences, to environmental and life sciences, social sciences and medicine. All projects are guided by the sector and build upon the core strengths of the University of Southampton in maritime, aeronautical, astronautics, acoustics, medical, and electronic & computer systems.
