About Mechatronic and Robotic Engineering, MEng - at University of Sheffield

Explore the core of mechatronics and robotics – from maths, computing and control to electronics and intelligent systems. Put theory into practice through hands-on projects using 3D CAD, 3D printing, laser cutting and more in the iForge makerspace.

Shape the future of intelligent machines with an integrated master’s degree in mechatronic and robotic engineering. This course combines mechanical design, computing, electronics and control to prepare you for a career at the cutting edge of robotics and automation.

Informed by world-leading research and designed in collaboration with industry partners, the programme blends theory with hands-on learning. You’ll use industry standard equipment and explore real-world applications in robotics, industrial control and advanced manufacturing.

In Year 1, you will build strong foundations in mathematics, computing, electronics and system modelling, alongside teamwork and project skills.

In Year 2, you will study robot principles, mechanics and machine vision, as well as control, communications and embedded systems. Apply your knowledge through design projects and system integration.

In Year 3, you will take on an advanced project and specialise in either Mechatronics and Robotics (eg robot design, motion planning, machine learning) or Control (eg digital signal processing, optimisation, real-time embedded control).

In Year 4, you will deepen your expertise with a major research project and advanced modules in your chosen specialisation.

This integrated master’s degree gives you an extra year of advanced study, helping you graduate with the technical expertise, practical skills and professional confidence to make an immediate impact in industry or research.

This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Institute of Measurement and Control and the Engineering Council UK.
