Investigative and Forensic Psychology – London based University of Liverpool

The MSc Investigative and Forensic Psychology provides you with a high quality, balanced programme of research and academic knowledge including awareness of professional, legal and ethical issues, and practical, communication and dissemination skills. We aim to enable you to acquire conceptual knowledge, skills and critical awareness through the following:

• Key readings – Provision of key readings in advance of lectures to give you an overview of the relevant conceptual models and an understanding of the key debates.
• Lectures – A series of lectures from core teaching staff.
• Visiting speakers – Lectures from practitioners, often using lively case examples.
• Tutorials – A number of tutorials accompanying some of the modules to allow for clarification, reflection and debate.
• Student seminars – Involvement in small seminar groups where each group delivers a series of short presentations to their fellow students.
• Practitioner seminars – Opportunity to engage in the Centre for Investigative Psychology and Centre for Critical and Major Incident Psychology practitioner seminars, as well as other larger scale events such as those run by the National Policing Improvements Agency.
• Traditional assessment methods-Essays, statistics exams and research project.

The University currently holds British Psychological Society (BPS) accreditation, as such the MSc Investigative and Forensic Psychology degree is recognised as providing an important step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist for students who have Graduate Basis for Chartership (see below).

In order to achieve chartered status you must complete the following components:

• GBC: An Undergraduate degree which is accredited by the BPS as having Graduate basis for Chartered membership (GBC)
• Stage 1: A Masters degree which is accredited by the BPS
• Stage 2: A minimum of two years full time supervised practice in employment following the MSc. For more details see the BPS website.

It is also recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as a Research Methods MSc and students taking this degree are eligible for the ESRC 1 + 3 studentships.

Entry requirements

The typical minimum entry requirement is a high 2:1 Bachelors degree (with Honours) in Psychology, or another relevant discipline, from a UK university. Due to the high demand for places, priority will be given to students who achieve 65% or above in the majority of their modules. Equivalent overseas degrees, together with an acceptable English language qualification (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent) are accepted. In order to achieve Stage 1 of BPS chartership the Bachelors degree must be recognised by the British Psychological Society (known as a GBC degree). We do however; accept applications who are not GBC. Prior forensic experience is not essential; however, it is viewed as giving applicants an advantage at the application and interview stage.
