Course overview

This is the ideal programme if you'd like to teach English as a foreign language or are already doing so but would like more training.

More particularly, the programme aims:

  • To make you aware of theoretical issues in language teaching and learning
  • To develop your understanding of current, practical classroom methodology
  • To introduce you to the latest approaches to language analysis
  • To help you understand the connections between theory and practice

This is a demanding programme, especially for non-native English speakers, so we provide excellent guidance and support, through Study Skills sessions and individual coaching.

Our tutors all have many years' experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages, in Britain and overseas, and they're very experienced teacher trainers, with active research interests in TESOL related areas.

All students take the core modules listed for semesters one and two, as well as completing the dissertation, normally on a subject related to the topics covered in their taught modules. Students choose three further taught modules from a selection on offer each year. Assessment of the core modules is on the basis of written assignments each of 4,000 words; Research Design is assessed on the basis of a portfolio of work. The remaining taught modules are assessed by take-home examinations.
