We've designed this programme for teachers, teacher trainers and materials writers in the field of Foreign Language Teaching (particularly English as a Foreign Language).

More particularly, the programme aims:

• To assist you in developing a deeper understanding of current, practical classroom methodology including testing and course and materials design
• To make you aware of the latest approaches to language analysis, including discourse analysis, systemic functional linguistics and corpus, to name but a few
• To clarify the connections between theory and practice

Normally you'll need a first degree and relevant professional experience before applying for this programme.

Our tutors all have many years' experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages, in Britain and overseas, and they're very experienced teacher trainers, with active research interests in Applied Linguistics and TESOL related areas.

You'll take four core modules, along with three further taught options from a wide selection offered each year. There'll also be a dissertation to write, normally on a subject related to the topics covered in their taught modules.

Assessment of three of the core modules is on the basis of written assignments, each of 4,000 words. The Research Design core module is assessed on the basis of a portfolio of work. The remaining taught modules are assessed by take-home examinations.

Entry requirements

For entry to our Masters programmes a good 2:1 class Bachelors degree in English studies or a similar subject is required. Applicants will have a first degree, usually in English, Linguistics or Education (but we will consider candidates who have studied other subjects). Teachers with more than one year relevant experience are eligible for this MA. If applicants do not have teaching experience they should apply for the MA in TESOL. International qualifications Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines. English language qualifications All applicants must have reached a minimum required standard of English language, and are required to provide evidence of this. Qualifications accepted by the University include GCSE English; GCE O level English; AS Level English; A Level English Language; IELTS; TOEFL; Cambridge Proficiency etc. Please see www.liv.ac.uk/international/countries/index.htm for a full list.
