Product Design and Management University of Liverpool

The aim of this MSc programme is to provide advanced training in all major aspects of product design from conceptual design, product modelling to prototyping to a high level of competence. This programme will train you to develop reliable, high quality products with true market appeal, within the budgets and tight timescales demanded by competitive businesses.

You'll gain detailed expertise in product design's key concepts, tools and methodologies, including:-

• innovative product development and design techniques
• advanced CAD/CAM and modelling
• materials selection
• industrial design
• rapid prototyping
• total quality management
• marketing

There's a strong practical element and you'll develop your skills through individual and group projects, using facilities that include:-

• CAD (ProE)
• CAM (Vericut, Machining Strategist)
• rapid prototyping (3D Printing, FDM, SLM and vacuum casting)
• reverse engineering (laser scanner and x-ray scanner).

As well as receiving excellent tuition from our world-renowned academics you'll be able to listen to visiting product designers and professors from the Royal Academy of Engineering talk about advanced concepts and case studies.

This programme is fully accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

This 12-month programme consists of compulsory and optional taught modules over two semesters and a major design project in the summer. PROJECTS Project work contributes 60 credits, which will be based on a topic of industrial or scientific relevance, and will be carried out in laboratories in the University or at an approved placement in industry. The project is examined by dissertation, and award of the MSc (Eng) degree will require evidence of in-depth understanding, mastery of research techniques, ability to analyse assembled data, and assessment of outcomes.

Entry requirements

For taught programmes in the School of Engineering, Programme and Major codes are indicated for the MSc (Eng) route only. However, PGDip and PGCert routes are available and students requiring advice about the codes for these programmes should contact the School. For all taught degree programmes the typical minimum entry requirement is a Bachelors degree (with Honours) at second class (2.2) level or better and in an appropriate field of study. Equivalent overseas degrees together with an acceptable English language qualification are also accepted. Individual consideration is given to mature engineers with significant and relevant experience and with professional qualifications. International qualifications Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines. English language qualifications All applicants must have reached a minimum required standard of English language, and are required to provide evidence of this. Qualifications accepted by the University include GCSE English; GCE O level English; AS Level English; A Level English Language; IELTS; TOEFL; Cambridge Proficiency etc. Please see www.liv.ac.uk/international/countries/index.htm for a full list. If you meet our other academic requirements but do not achieve the required level of English, it is possible to come and study at Liverpool on the University’s summer academic English programmes. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a grade of 0.5 (eg you need to improve from 6.0 to 6.5) you should attend the six week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a grade of 1.0 (eg you need to improve from 5.5 to 6.5) you should attend the ten week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 1.5 (eg you need to improve from 4.5 to 6.0) you should attend the 19 week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 2.0 (eg you need to improve from 4.5 to 6.5) you should attend the 29 week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 2.0 or 2.5 (eg you need to improve from 4.0 to 6.0 or 4.0 to 6.5) you should attend the 40 week course.
