Course overview
In recent years, societies around the world have faced unprecedented challenges: economic crises, rising unemployment and precarious work, especially among young people, mass migration, global crises such as pandemics and environmental disasters, the rise of extremism, and polarization around issues of identity. At the same time, phenomena such as gender inequality, poverty, and widening inequalities both within societies and between the Global North and the Global South highlight the need for social analysis and intervention. Technological advances complicate further this changing social landscape.
The Master's Programme in Sociology, Social Policy, and Intervention aims at attracting students and professionals who wish to deepen their theoretical and practical understanding of the aforementioned phenomena and their effects, as well as potential ways of addressing them. The programme explores how different approaches to social policy and social intervention - including the actions of social movements, NGOs, and other collective forms of organisation, both in the physical and digital environment - contribute to addressing or, in some cases, reproducing social problems. At the same time, it serves as a platform for reflection, exchange of ideas, and co-construction of ways to approach contemporary social challenges.
The aim of the master's programme is to offer specialisation in the field of Sociology, with an emphasis on the connection between social theory, empirical research, and social action. The curriculum covers a wide range of contemporary issues: family, gender and sexuality, education and work, health and social welfare, environment and culture. It focuses on the integration of theory and research for the interpretation of social phenomena, the production and analysis of social data, and the formulation of social policies and interventions. The interdisciplinary dimension of the program is reinforced through courses in the fields of Political Science, Journalism, and Media Studies, thus offering a rich educational environment.
The Master's programme in Sociology, Social Policy, and Intervention has the dual goal of training professionals who seek to contribute to the understanding and addressing of social problems and challenges, and thus contribute to social change through various workplaces, and to shaping critically thinking citizens in the context of contemporary democratic societies.
