About Silversmithing, Goldsmithing & Jewellery, BA (Hons) - at University for the Creative Arts (UCA)

Our Silversmithing, Goldsmithing and Jewellery course is based on the traditions of craftsmanship, combined with a forward-thinking approach to design and innovation.

It’ll provide an innovative approach to your experimentation and realisation of ideas, with a focus on specialist technical and creative skills for the industry.

Our tutors will equip you with the skills to initiate and develop creative ideas in fine metalworking, so there’s no requirement for prior specialist knowledge.

Physical making and material investigation are at the core of what you’ll be doing; either as a jeweller making body adornments, or as a silversmith exploring ideas for functional domestic objects.

We place great importance on both hand and digital fabrication skills. You’ll develop your own personal design identity in our stimulating creative environment, with your own personal work space.

The BA (Hons) Silversmithing, Goldsmithing and Jewellery course provides a broad, balanced programme covering fine metalworking from the development of original design ideas through to finished work, exploring approaches ranging from conventional jewellery and silversmithing to more personal work aimed at a gallery context.

Working within focused design briefs, you’ll acquire a range of skills through a combination of workshops, lectures, seminars, tutorials and most importantly through your own practice.

A questioning approach to materials, perceptions, ideas and outcomes is encouraged to help you develop your own interests and distinctive creative direction.

By designing, making and evaluating, you’ll develop practical skills, critical judgement and professional confidence, building your self-reliance and the ability to engage in creative problem solving.

Long-standing links with industry and leading organisations such as The Goldsmiths’ Company, West Dean, and The British Art Medals Society will give you the chance to take part in national and international competitions and placements.

Live industry projects give you invaluable experience and the study of business, marketing and promotion, will enable you to develop an understanding of professional and entrepreneurial practice before graduating.

With access to excellent workshops and your own workspace, you’ll work alongside like-minded designers and makers in a stimulating creative studio and workshop environment at our Rochester campus, where a supportive culture encourages innovation and excellence.

An additional ‘International Year’ study/work placement abroad option is available between second and third year study and a European study trip is organised each year which is open to all year groups.
