Deaf Studies Trinity College Dublin

The Diploma in Deaf Studies can be taken full-time over a period of two years or, for appropriately qualified candidates, part-time over a period of three years. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the Deaf community and Irish Sign Language for those wishing to work in or with the Deaf community. Central importance is given to the development of (i) proficiency in Irish Sign Language, and (ii) an understanding of the position of the Deaf community in Irish society and internationally. Other course modules deal with issues such as sign linguistics, bilingualism, the sociolinguistics of sign language, Deaf people in society, ethics and professional practice, and an analysis of social policy underlying service provision to the Deaf community.

Selection and assessment processes

Candidates will be selected by interview: no prior knowledge of Irish Sign Language is required. The award of the diploma is based on continuous assessment, a practice placement, and final examinations. A student whose placement performance is considered unsatisfactory may, in exceptional circumstances, be allowed a further placement experience. Appropriately qualified candidates who are currently working in a professional capacity within the Deaf community may take the diploma on a part-time basis over three years. In this instance, candidates are required to complete twenty taught modules (ISL is compulsory) and must complete a dissertation. In such circumstances, the award of the diploma is based on continuous assessment, submission of a dissertation on a subject area within the remit of Deaf studies, and final examinations.
