Course overview

Trinity's Ph.D. in political science represents a creative and radical departure from the traditional political science Ph.D. offered almost everywhere else in Europe. Traditional European Ph.D.'s are based almost exclusively on an extended period of solo research. This leads to a book-length thesis on what can be a very specialised field.

The Trinity Ph.D. in political science is designed with the explicit intention of producing rigorously trained, widely read and accomplished political scientists who are able to take their place at once in the forefront of their profession. Students graduating from the programme will be able to read, appreciate, and apply research results on a wide range of themes, well beyond their immediate areas of specialisation. With some preparation, they should be able to teach or research in several different fields of the discipline.

The Trinity Ph.D. in political science takes four years to complete. It consists of a series of intensive taught courses followed by a substantial piece of supervised research of equivalent quality to any traditional Ph.D. thesis.

Applications are invited from candidates who have, or who expect to have, a good honors degree in political science or a related discipline. The department is actively seeking to recruit a varied mix of students from different disciplinary, cultural and educational backgrounds. In order to attract excellent candidates for whom finance might otherwise be a problem, a limited number of postgraduate awards is available.
