About Gerontological Nursing, Graduate Diploma - at Trinity College Dublin

Aim

To strengthen and develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes of participants attending, thus enabling them to fulfil their highest potential in both their personal and professional lives

Objectives

This course is designed to give a solid academic base to the understanding and development of gerontological nursing care. The course provides an advanced grounding in methods of research, in addition to developing the theoretical and practical aspects of management, clinical practice and education in gerontological nursing. The various modules offered lead on from, and complement, the subjects taken at Degree and Postgraduate Diploma level, thus continuing the model of the spiral curriculum.

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:
a) Strengthen and develop their expertise in their area of practice through the use of enhanced knowledge reflective skills and research-based practice.

b) Devise, implement and evaluate methods for improving the quality of gerontological nursing care/ or nurse education provided in Ireland.

c) Exercise administrative and intellectual leadership in their profession and the disciplines contained within.

d) Extend their skills in the critical evaluation of research reports and plan, conduct and evaluate research studies.

Admission Requirements

(a) Registration as a nurse with An Bord Altranais, or eligible for such registration
and
(b) A minimum of two years’ full-time or equivalent recent clinical nursing practice since first registration.
and
(c) Hold the Postgraduate Diploma in Gerontological Nursing.
or
Hold a degree in Nursing Studies or equivalent and satisfy the Course Committee that they have the entry requirements necessary to complete and benefit from the course.
