Course overview

The course is aimed at students who want to develop their practical laboratory skills and their underlying knowledge of chemistry. It gives emphasis to analytical science and provides thorough grounding in the theory and practice of - modern organic chemistry - inorganic chemistry - physical chemistry You study in a real-world context, with biological, environmental and materials chemistry being investigated, as well as more traditional topics. The course has a strong laboratory focus. You develop skills using the latest techniques and instrumentation in all aspects of chemistry. Practical work in our modern and well-equipped facilities makes up 20 per cent of your timetable. This helps you to develop into an effective, safe, employable practical scientist. Through structured work you develop transferable skills such as - team working - communication - numeracy - problem solving. These areas are important to all future employers. Employability is enhanced further through a fully supported paid work placement in year three, which we strongly recommend. It allows you to develop your skills and makes you much more attractive to employers. Our national and multinational placement partners include - GlaxoSmithKline - AstraZeneca - Pfizer Limited - Quotient Bioresearch - ReckittBenckiser. Placements can be taken in the UK, Europe, America or further afield, and can pay up to around £17,000 for the year. Most of our teaching staff are active in our Biomedical Research Centre (BMRC). This allows us to feed scientific developments directly into our courses. BMRC staff are active in chemical, forensic and biomedical research. In the final year of study, one third of your time is spent on a research project where you use skills and knowledge gained in the earlier parts of your course to investigate a specific topic. Many of our graduates go on to postgraduate study, including research degrees (PhD), masters degrees (MSc) and teacher training.
