Course overview
Biotechnology is a rapidly developing, multidisciplinary field that is underpinned by topics such as molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology and microbiology.
This course develops your understanding of these topics in the first year. In your second and final years, you apply your knowledge and skills to areas such as molecular biotechnology, bioremediation, plant biotechnology and bioinformatics.
Your studies include
applying biotechnology to develop treatments for serious diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disease
how we use microorganisms in bioremediation, such as bacteria to clean oil spills
how biotechnology affects society
plant biology in the molecular world
analytical, reflective and critical thinking for scientists
The course has a strong laboratory focus and you develop skills in the latest practical techniques. Lab work in our modern and well-equipped facilities makes up 20 per cent of your timetable.
A strong theme of professional development is also embedded in the course to enhance your growth as a scientist and improve your employability.
We offer a fully supported paid work placement in year three, which allows you to develop your skills and makes you more attractive to potential employers.
Our national and multinational placement partners include * Johnson & Johnson * GE Healthcare * Pfizer Limited * GlaxoSmithKline * AstraZeneca * Pfizer Limited * Covance Clinical Research * biotechnology companies. Placements typically pay between £8,000 and £17,000 a year.
Most of our teaching staff are active in our Biomedical Research Centre (BMRC)http://www.shu.ac.uk/research/bmrc/. This allows us to feed scientific developments directly into our courses. The department has UK Research Council funding for biotechnology research.
If you have previously studied biological science in higher education, it may be possible to enter the final year of the course directly, depending on previous qualifications.
