Course overview

This is one of the largest and most established undergraduate physiotherapy courses in the UK. Because of this we have strong links with physiotherapy departments across South Yorkshire and the Trent region. Physiotherapists treat people of all ages, with many illnesses and medical conditions. For a full description of the role of the physiotherapist see http://www.csp.org.uk As a graduate, you normally start your career by moving from one speciality to another and gaining clinical expertise in different areas. You can choose to continue with this broad-based work or to specialise in a branch of physiotherapy. This could be in * neurology * outpatients * orthopaedics * cardio-respiratory * care of the older person * sport physiotherapy * work with children (paediatrics). We normally base our teaching at our Collegiate Crescent Campus. We have teaching rooms that reproduce the work environment and use the latest teaching and clinical equipment and technology. During the course, you must successfully complete around 1,000 hours of clinical education in various placement settings. You have one four-week placement in year one, three five-week placements in year two and two six-week placements in year three. The teaching staff are clinical specialists who teach in their areas of expertise. They are also clinically active and involved in research in their fields. Our staff specialise in * sports physiotherapy * paediatrics * respiratory care * neurology * musculoskeletal work. The course content reflects these specialities. We also offer these areas at postgraduate (continuing professional development) level for graduate physiotherapists. You study some interprofessional education modules alongside students from other health disciplines, such as nurses, radiographers and paramedics. This shared learning experience allows you to develop teamworking and understand the contribution different professionals make.
