Course overview
The events and leisure industries are an important part of cultural and business activity in the UK and overseas. They include private, public and voluntary organisations.
This course meets the increasing demand for graduates with management skills in planning and organising events.
It prepares you for a career in events management but specialises in sport and leisure events and managing multi-purpose venues, such as football and sports stadia.
You study events theory, policy and practice integrated with business management. We develop your understanding of what is involved in planning and managing events and other leisure activities.
An important part of your work involves projects and business simulation. Through these, you experience the part venues play in the leisure industry and in events such as * sporting events * concerts * festivals * business conferences * weddings.
You can take a one year work placement in the third year. You also have a short period of events industry experience in the second year. This can be in the UK, the USA, Canada or Europe. This valuable work experience develops your industry knowledge and increases your employability after you graduate.
Examples of placement providers include * Corkscrew Events, Birmingham * Sheffield City Council Events Unit * Sheffield International Venues * Acorn Adventure Holiday Company * Walt Disney World Resort, Florida * The National Trust * Marie Curie Cancer Charity * Universal Studios, Florida
We focus the course on the events and leisure industry, but the broader analytical and personal skills you develop are applicable to many careers.
Your learning involves taking part in seminars, workshops and projects in our modern facilities at City Campus.
If you already have an advanced diploma, higher national diploma, foundation degree or equivalent qualification in this subject, you can take a one year top up course, based on the final year of this degree. This allows you to convert your qualification to an honours degree. Please see http://www.shu.ac.uk/courses/914
This course has strong links with industry. There are several visits to venues such as Sheffield Arena, Don Valley Stadium and Sheffield City Hall. Industry specialists provide expert knowledge through guest lecture appearances.
