Course overview

This course is different from other IT courses. As well as learning how to design and build IT systems, you also gain an understanding of how to support and manage existing IT systems in organisations. You gain a wide range of skills, and the ability to communicate with and understand both business and technical users of IT systems. You learn to apply the latest developments to existing systems. You also become skilled in using modern industry standard tools and techniques to solve business problems. As your career progresses you can lead project developments and take responsibility for the long term support and use of computing systems. In your third year, you take a professional IT placement in a suitable organisation. This gives you valuable work experience and develops your personal skills and abilities. It also gives you a fresh approach to your studies and improves your employment prospects. An important feature of year four is your project. We assess this with your work experience, and together they form part of the professional qualification. Lectures and practical sessions take place at our City Campus where we have specialist computing laboratories and the learning centrehttp://www.shu.ac.uk/services/lits/libraries.html, which houses our library and multimedia resources. On this practical course you learn through hands on experience. You look at network technologies and protocols for local and wide area networks and internet working devices, as well as creating web pages using HTML.
