Course overview

This part-time, flexible-learning programme will help you develop the writing skills essential for the screen industry and the theatre.

You willl explore the art of storytelling, the Aristotelian origins of drama, narrative structure, character function and creation, the exploitation of arena, decisions on location and key narrative tricks and devices.

You will also learn how to convert ideas into a saleable product, and how to deal with relevant legal and financial issues.

If you choose to specialise in Screen, your study will culminate in the creation of a two-hour feature film screenplay. If you choose to specialise in Theatre, you will write a full-length play/performance text.

Why should I choose this programme?

The script is the cornerstone of television and film production - from the point of conception through to the realisation of the final work, the script forms the spine, structure and design of the final creative project. All production ideas, decisions and executions emanate from it.

This programme trains those who wish to write, but it will also be useful for the many other roles that are essential to the industry: script editors, developers, producers, directors, agents and distributors all require a keen understanding of the writer’s craft.

Key skills, aims and objectives

You will develop transferable script skills which can be deployed in all areas of origination and creative analysis and which will enhance you employment prospects in a very wide and varied industry – not only as a writer but also as a script editor, reader, developer, producer, director, agent or distributor.

Future opportunities

The programme will develop transferable script skills which can be deployed in all areas of origination and creative analysis and which enhance the employment prospects of anyone who wishes to work in a very wide and varied industry.

Entry requirements

Our admissions requirement is a minimum of a lower-second-class (2:2) UK honours undergraduate degree, or its international equivalent, in any discipline, from a recognised institution. Other international qualifications, as recommended by the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) will also be accepted. In addition, we ask you to submit a sample of your creative writing and to undertake an interview. Samples of creative writing may be any length, ranging from short excerpts to full length screen/stageplays, to finished portfolios of work. These may be sent electronically, or presented as hard copies. We are looking for evidence of potential that will then be developed throughout the duration of the two-year course. Please note that it is not necessary to have already completed a portfolio of work in order to be eligible for entry to the MA Writing for Screen & Stage. Exceptional entry: We offer exceptional entry to the MA Writing for Screen & Stage for candidates who either do not meet the formal academic requirements, or whose qualifications were obtained a significantly long time ago and cannot provide formal evidence of these qualifications. We recognise and value life experience and personal motivation, as demonstrated in your CV, sample(s) of creative writing, personal statement and interview. All exceptional entry decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, at the discretion of the course leader. For those applicants whose mother tongue is not English, we also require evidence of English language proficiency. Please refer to our website for further details.
