Course overview
This course is for dental graduates seeking to develop an understanding of facial growth and development, the development of the dentition, occlusal function and the correction of facial deformity and malocclusion. It consists of a structured three-year programme, with all clinics being fully supervised with close chairside instruction. You are expected to sit the MSc (University of London) examination over a two-year period and to complete the MOrth RCSEng examination within three years.
The course aims to enable you to:
Understand the biomechanical principles of tooth movement
Understand the development, growth and influence of the skeletal and soft tissues on the dentition
Understand the importance of materials science in orthodontics
Formulate a diagnosis of malocclusion and appropriate treatment plan
Apply the theory and practice of clinical orthodontics to treat a variety of malocclusions.
Course content
This structured three-year programme includes lectures, seminars, clinical demonstrations, journal clubs and special topic short courses.
Lecture and seminars cover:
normal growth and development of the head, face and dentition
the physiology of the face and jaws including the temporomandibular joint
the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of malocclusion.
You will be taught how to use state-of-the-art appliances to an advanced level and their application in surgical orthodontics and interdisciplinary dentistry.
Assessment
You will be assessed through two written papers and the submission of an original research project. There is also an oral examination and clinical assessments involving case presentations and a practical.
Entry requirements
Applicants should possess the minimum qualification of the MFDS of one of the Royal Colleges, and should have spent no less than two years after graduating in the practice of general dentistry. Wide experience in the other dental specialties, including oral surgery and paediatric dentistry, would be considered an advantage. Students whose first language is not English must have a minimum IELTS score of 7.5.
