Course fee notes
There are a number of sources of funding available for Masters students.
These include a significant package of competitive Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) bursaries and scholarships in a range of subject areas, as well as external sources of funding.
Course overview
The MSc in Mathematics aims to give a rigorous training in advanced mathematics to students who have already obtained a first degree with substantial mathematical content. Students successfully completing the MSc will acquire depth of knowledge in their chosen areas of mathematics. The MSc is an excellent preparation for students who are considering pursuing research in the field.
Course content
The main areas of mathematics that may be pursued within this MSc are pure mathematics (especially algebra), dynamical systems, probability and statistics, and astronomy.
You will normally take eight courses in total, with one course typically comprising 24 hours of lectures given during a twelve-week semester. In addition to the MSc courses offered at Queen Mary, you can also choose from an extremely wide range of advanced mathematics lecture courses offered at other Colleges of the University of London. During the summer period, after the examinations, you are required to complete a dissertation, working largely independently in an advanced topic in mathematics.
Assessment
Examinations are held May to June on the courses taken. Dissertations are evaluated in September. Successful completion of the MSc programme will result in the award of the degree of MSc in Mathematics (possibly with Distinction).
Entry requirements
Equivalent of a UK first or good upper-second class honours degree having substantial mathematical content. If you are not qualified for admission to the MSc you may be considered for the full-time Postgraduate Certificate in Mathematics, Astronomy and Computing. A very good performance in the Certificate will qualify you for admission to the MSc.
A limited number of bursaries should be available for highly qualified MSc applicants.
