This degree focuses on concepts from economics and business studies disciplines, as applied to food, fibre and energy chains.

This is an applied course where you will learn about the management of businesses operating from the farm gate to consumer plates.

Along with business management skills, you will learn and be able to reflect on the key challenges of securing a sustainable food supply for this and future generations.

Key topics covered are:

• food economics and management of agro-food businesses
• food policy and its implications for businesses and consumers
• gathering evidence through data analysis to support sound decision
• agriculture and food production and distribution
• consumer studies and marketing management

This degree could lead to work in a range of international business sectors, such as food markets and marketing, retail management, and business consultancy.

Study abroad for international experience

UK and EU students can broaden their academic experience and expand horizons by studying abroad as part of their degree.

You can study at a partner institution abroad for between three months and one year through the Erasmus scheme.

Current countries include France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary and Estonia.

You'll be based on our vibrant campus, just a few minutes' walk from Newcastle city centre.

You'll split your time between the School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and Newcastle University Business School.

Our facilities will help you develop practical skills for your future career. They include:

• two University farms
• well-equipped teaching and research labs
• modern Business School in the heart of Newcastle's commercial district

Teaching and assessment

On average you will have around 14 contact hours a week. You'll learn through lectures, seminars and small group tutorials.

There will also be field trips, so you can see how your learning applies in a practical context.

Assessment is mostly through examinations. You'll also complete coursework that includes essays, projects and case studies.

To help you develop skills for your future career, you'll also complete a business simulation project and an independent research project in Stage 3.
