Course overview

As our lives become increasingly digitised, cybercrime is expanding in scope and impact. From personal accounts to global business systems, criminals can cause significant harm remotely, with industry reports estimating that the global cost of cybercrime now rivals that of the illegal drugs trade.

MSc Cybercrime and Digital Investigations explores cybercrime from criminological, legal and research perspectives, helping you understand how online offences are committed, regulated and investigated. You'll develop practical computing knowledge and digital capabilities to respond effectively to online threats affecting individuals and organisations.

The course is ideal for graduates and professionals seeking specialist roles in areas such as victim support, policing, child protection, offender services, and corporate environments where there is a growing need to prevent, manage and respond to cybercrime and online safety issues. On completion, you'll be well prepared for careers at the intersection of cybercrime, criminal justice and digital security, or for further postgraduate study.

Why Study Cybercrime and Digital Investigations at Middlesex?

• A leading centre for criminology - Middlesex has been at the forefront of criminological teaching and research since the 1970s and helped to establish criminology as an independent discipline in the UK

• Expert-led teaching - Learn from leading specialists working in online safety, cybercrime and child protection

• Real-world cybercrime insight - Understand how cyber criminals exploit internet systems and develop practical approaches to preventing and responding to these crimes

• Strong career prospects - Gain specialist skills and knowledge in a growing and in-demand area of criminology, opening up a wide range of employment opportunities

What Will You Learn?

You will gain an understanding of how cyber criminals exploit digital systems and online environments, and learn strategies to prevent, manage and respond to online threats. The programme also examines the social, legal and criminological dimensions of cybercrime, from financial offences to online abuse and child exploitation, helping you critically evaluate the impact of these crimes on individuals, organisations and society.

Through engaging with real-world case studies and research-led teaching, you will learn to evaluate the effectiveness of prevention strategies, critically analyse digital evidence, and design approaches to reduce harm caused by cybercrime. You will also gain insight into the growing role of technology in criminal behaviour and justice, preparing you to adapt to emerging challenges in a rapidly changing digital landscape.

The programme is structured over three terms, with four core modules and one optional module completed in terms one and two, followed by a dissertation in term three.

By the end of the programme, you will have developed specialist knowledge and professional skills that are highly valued by employers in policing, victim support, child protection, offender services, corporate security, and other areas where cybercrime prevention and online safety are essential.
