What will I learn about Politics and Global Religions on this course?

Politics affects all our lives. In this course we explore the many ways this happens. From social injustice, culture wars and climate change, to migration, populism, and declining trust in democracy. You’ll explore such major local and global political challenges through knowledge of demographically significant religions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and African religions.

You’ll take approximately two thirds of your core modules in Politics and one third in Global Religions, with optional modules in a range of subjects. Our teaching is founded on a clear view of the connections between these disciplines. Politics cannot be fully understood only through states, parties, policies; it also needs attention to communities, gender, belonging and exclusion.

Our experts cover a diverse range of research specialisms and will support you to develop a sophisticated, interdisciplinary understanding of global challenges. You will have the flexibility to develop your own pathway by choosing Politics and Religion modules that align to your interests.

In your final year, you can choose to research and write a dissertation, focused on either Politics and International Relations or Global Religions, but potentially combining them. You’ll receive guidance from expert tutors at every step of the way, from selecting your research topic to submitting your completed project. You may wish to pursue a topic which brings together your knowledge of religion and politics.

What professional experience will I gain?

Join the only university to have both a parliamentary studies module, run in conjunction with UK Parliament, and a dedicated Politics Policy School with the HM Government Open Innovation team. Here you may meet MPs, parliamentary officials and policy experts to explore how Parliament makes policy. Through networking with external partners, policymakers, and guest speakers you will gain valuable insights into the key political issues of the moment.

You will also have the opportunity to apply for an internship with the Richardson Institute for Peace Studies, based in our department. This could see you participate in a research project with an NGO, a faith-based organisation, or a think tank. An ideal way to build up your experience and your CV.

Study abroad

The study abroad option is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is thinking of working abroad during their career or who simply wants the experience of living and studying overseas as part of their degree.

Often study abroad students describe the year abroad as a “transformative experience”, as it can shape your future career path as well as having a positive impact on your personal development.
