About Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy, MSc - at KU Leuven

This Master's programme aims to train graduates to conduct research-based practice in physiotherapy and to develop expertise in a specific domain. This highly specialized programme is organised in collaboration with top Flemish universities and experts within this vital field of social scientific research.

What is the programme all about?

The Master in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy aims to train graduates to conduct evidence-based practice in physiotherapy and to develop expertise in a specific domain of rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

Organized in collaboration with other Flemish universities, this programme is highly specialized. All applicants for the Master of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy begin by taking the preparatory programme.

Structure

The first year of the Master’s of Rehabilitation Science and Physiotherapy (Leuven) programme offers a general, research-based approach to physiotherapy and rehabilitation sciences. You will be trained in broad research methodologies and their vital applications in the field.

In the second year of the master’s programme, the focus shifts towards knowledge and skills related to one of the majors offered. Classes on advanced theories and skills are combined with a three-month internship period within the chosen major. The majors offered include:

  • Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation (Manual Therapy or Sports Physical Therapy)
  • Neurological Rehabilitation
  • Paediatric Rehabilitation
  • Rehabilitation for Internal Disorders
  • Rehabilitation in Mental Health Care

To obtain international and professional recognition (e.g. IFOMPT), some majors will require study credits in addition to the 120 required for the master's programme.

Strengths

  • One of the only programmes in the field that offers an MSc degree where evidence-based practice and strong research are combined. Our research centres top the 17th place on the global QS ranking, 2th place in Europe.
  • Excellent facilities due to close collaboration with University Hospitals Leuven.
  • A flexible programme that allows you to custom design the content of your curriculum depending on the competences you wish to acquire. International options: the faculty is very active on an international level; students have the possibility to undertake (part of) the programme’s internship at an institution abroad should they want to.

You can find more information on the website of the Faculty of Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences and the website of the Master of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy.
