About Mathematics (with Statistics), BSc (Hons) - at Keele University
For those who want to understand and shape the world through numbers, our IMA-accredited Mathematics (with Statistics) programme combines a solid grounding in the fundamental aspects of both fields, with training in statistical software to explore advanced applications in Medical Statistics and Financial Mathematics. With opportunities to spend time in industry and employability focused modules, you'll graduate with the practical, problem solving and analytical skills valued within a variety of sectors. Course overview Mathematics lies at the heart of numerous advancements in technology, science, and engineering, enabling us to understand and drive innovations that shape the future—from artificial intelligence to climate science. Statistics provides valuable insights into various situations, helping us to make informed decisions.
From businesses learning about their customers, making predications and improving their products to pharmaceutical companies using statistical experiments to develop new treatments, the applications for statistics are endless. Our Mathematics (with Statistics) programme at Keele offers comprehensive coverage of the three core disciplines—pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics—while placing strong emphasis on developing the key problem-solving, logical reasoning, practical and employability skills employers seek. During your first year, you will build a strong foundation in mathematical thinking with modules in algebra, calculus, and differential equations, whilst developing your skills in data analysis using the statistical software R. You will also begin to develop key employability skills by working in teams on group projects, solving problems and communicating your findings in visual ways.
Throughout the programme you'll apply your learning to real-world theories or experiences, providing context to your learning and strengthening your understanding. You'll also have the chance to align your studies to your passions by choosing from a variety of optional modules. In year two, you will strengthen your knowledge in pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics, whilst expanding your skillset by learning the programming language Python. Focusing on your employability skills, you will have the opportunity to spend time in industry with both full time and modular placement opportunities.
You will also build on your professional and transferable skills with extended problem work, report writing, effective communication of mathematical results, and collaboration with others. In your final year you will study specialised modules related to statistics including partial differential equations, financial maths and medical statistics. You may also choose to work on a final year research project, applying theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills to a technical, software, research or business problem. Your research project is an excellent opportunity for you to draw together skills in experimental study design, critical interpretation of data, presentation and project management.
