About Biochemistry with Integrated Master's, MSci - at Keele University

Accelerate your career in biochemistry by gaining the advanced problem-solving, communication and research skills to address real-world issues. Investigating some of the most exciting areas of 21st century life science and medical research. Our four-year Biochemistry with Integrated Master's MSci will be of particular interest to those who wish to continue in a research career, such as further study to PhD level, working in industry or the wider bioscience sector. Course overview Our Biochemistry degree explores human and mammalian biochemistry and how this is advancing our understanding of the molecular basis of conditions ranging from diabetes and cancer, to the interactions of microorganisms and viruses with their hosts as agents of infectious disease, and how this can be controlled.

Initial modules will provide you with a broad and varied grounding in modern biochemistry. Building on this you will continue to expand your skillset by examining the application of biochemistry to topics such as drug design or structure and function of proteins involved in the immune response. In your third year, you will choose from a range of optional modules in areas of cutting-edge bioscience research and complete a research project. The fourth year of study is designed to enhance your research skills in the critical evaluation of scientific literature and in the design and conduct of an authentic research study.

You will also develop a greater awareness of research impact, the processes involved in communicating your research findings and securing funding. A comprehensive laboratory programme runs throughout the course utilising our state-of-the-art David Attenborough Laboratories and Central Science Laboratories, where you will develop key skills in diverse biochemical and molecular biology techniques. Here you will put theory into practice, and develop skills in experimental study design and optimisation through experiential, enquiry-based learning, culminating in your final year research project. A key feature of this course is our structured programme of academic and professional development workshops.

From core practical laboratory and communication skills to interview techniques and CV writing, we will provide you with tools, skills and the connections to develop a strong foundation of employability skills for your future career.
