Course overview
The Master of Music at Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg, the Netherlands, is an advanced degree programme for highly gifted musicians who seek a career as a professional performer on the international concert stage. The unique dimension of the Master of Music at Fontys is the personalized component: students receive a two-year scholarship and can tailor the program in accordance with the needs of their emerging career. Students may use their scholarship for taking courses with professors at Fontys and even with external professors and artists.
You will be supervised by your main professor, our personal career coach, and a research coach. As a Master of Music student at Fontys you receive a two-year personal education budget. The personal budget amount depends on your specialization. In the academic year 2019-2020 the personal budget ranged from €3000 to €4000 per year for students in their first and second year of study. You can use your personal budget to personalize the curriculum in accordance to your artistic and professional needs. Students who wish to take lessons with artists who teach outside Fontys may use this budget to do so, even when the artist is based in another country. The school maintains strong connections with local concert halls and venues. Therefore, as a student you will have several performance opportunities in the region.
Entry requirements
Prerequisite for admission is a Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent.
English language requirements
As the Master of Music programme is taught in English, students have to prove having sufficient command of the English language i.e.:
- IELTS: 5,5
- TOEFL paper: 525
- TOEFL computer: 196
- TOEFL internet: 70
- TOEIC*: 620
- Cambridge ESOL: FCE-C
* = Only if the units ‘Speaking & Writing’ and ‘Listening & Reading’ have been completed successfully.
Some applicants may be exempted from submitting the language proficiency test results:
- Applicants who have a Dutch diploma of secondary education, at least HAVO / VWO / MBO-4.
- Applicants who have a diploma of secondary education in a country listed in the diploma list drawn up on behalf of the associates of institutions of higher education, as published on the website of the code of conduct.
- Applicants who have followed two years of their previous education in English.
- Applicants who have adequate knowledge of the English language tested and approved during the intake (only EU students)
Deadline documents
Once admitted, you will be requested to send a proof of the English language requirement (except in abovementioned cases), a certified copy and official translation in English of your original bachelor diploma and grades list.
Note for Non-EU students: make sure you prepare your documents before 1 May.
For non-EU students the deadline is begin of May (to arrange the visa in time).
For EU students the deadline is end of June (including a proof of the English language requirement when the English language skills were not sufficient during the intake).
