Course overview

Ecology is an integrated discipline that studies relationships among individuals, populations and communities. We provide students a wide ecological background across both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, as well as molecular and evolutionary ecology. Beside lectures and courses we consider the practical diploma project to be of the topmost importance: we offer training in a wide range of topics supervised by experts in the fields of macroecology, ecogeography, community ecology, invasion ecology, microbial ecology and biogeochemistry, ecology of extreme environments, stream ecology, restoration ecology, behavioral ecology, molecular ecology, and evolutionary ecology. We are not restricted to any organismal group, still, most of our research is performed on invertebrates (mainly insects and crustaceans), vertebrates (predominantly birds, fishes and reptiles), algae, plants and microbial communities. Our activities are not restricted to any specific geographic region. Mostly, however, we focus on Central and Mediterranean Europe, polar regions and western and southern Africa. We are working both in the field and in the laboratory, combining a wide array of techniques including mathematical modelling, analyses of large datasets, genomics including metabarcoding and environmental DNA analyses, and microscopy. The study of Master degree in ecology is open for any student who accomplished an adequate training on bachelor level (i.e. biological sciences or fields as environmental studies, agriculture, water management etc.).
