Course overview

Comedy is a serious art form. It challenges our beliefs, it’s a bastion of free speech, a tool for progressive change and a pathway to community. Comedy unites by framing topics in a manner we hadn’t thought of before, to make painful things make sense, and to bring us joy through laughter.

For these reasons, a career as a Comic Performer, Writer, Director or Producer can be truly fulfilling, and it all begins at Collarts.

This course is designed for those who want to get straight to work in the comedy industry, and it covers different homes of comedy, from theatre, film and television to radio, podcasting and web series. Our lecturers are all leading comedy industry professionals and, having successfully walked the path ahead of you, are ready to share their invaluable knowledge and skills.

Focusing on comedy performance, comedy writing, production, and entrepreneurship, our Comedy course will give you the knowledge, skills and contacts to develop and manage a career in the entertainment industry.

You'll create a portfolio of comedic work unique to your creative style, plus you’ll work closely with other students and alumni to foster a supportive creative community within the arts.

Entry requirements

At Collarts, we're not just looking for students; we're on the lookout for the future of comedy. To see if you fit the bill, we’ll hold a quick audition involving a short performance from original or pre-selected material, along with a comedic written piece such as a short monologue, sketch, jokes or other original comedic material.

We'll also hold an informal admissions interview where you can tell us about your experience, background, and passion for comedy. There are no cookie-cutter moulds to fit into at Collarts. We're all about celebrating diversity, individuality, and the kaleidoscope of creativity that makes each applicant unique.

Our English requirement is an overall IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent (with no single band score below 6.0) for all the courses, except Entertainment Journalism, where students are required to have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (with no single band score below 6.0).
