Course overview

This programme is designed for lay or ordained persons, from all traditions, who are interested in exploring the challenges of Celtic missional and evangelistic approaches and spirituality.

Celtic Christianity is a living stream and one that has much to teach contemporary Christianity through its understanding of evangelism, of lives given completely to God, and what it means to live and work outside of Christendom.

There are two core units of study for the Mission (Celtic Mission and Spirituality) stream:

  • Celtic Mission and Spirituality – main themes include a study of Celtic mission and evangelism practices, an understanding of Celtic Christian spirituality and how spirituality, mission and evangelism were integrated for Celtic Christians. The course is assessed by a 6,000-7,000 word paper
  • Celtic Mission and Spirituality Literature – main themes include an exploration of Celtic spirituality and mission practices based on a study of original writings, such as Patrick’s Confession and Letter to Coroticus, Bede’s The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, the Carmina Gadelica and writings of Columba, Columbanus and others. The Literature review is assessed by a 6,000-7,000 word paper.

This stream can be undertaken part time at a number of different levels:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Mission (Celtic Mission and Spirituality): a two-year part-time course incorporating the two units of study
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Mission (Celtic Mission and Spirituality): a two-year part-time course incorporating the two core units of study and two units of study from across the syllabus.
  • MA in Mission (Celtic Mission and Spirituality): a one-year full-time or a two-year part-time course incorporating the two units of study AND two units of study from across the syllabus, plus a Masters level dissertation of 12–15,000 words.
