What is ETIAS?
In mid-2025 the visa free travel regulations are due to change for people travelling to certain European countries. The EU is introducing ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), which is an online system (similar to an e-visa) that will enhance border security and streamline travel procedures for non-EU nationals who are exempt from visa requirements for short stays (less than 90 days).
As an international student, ETIAS is only relevant if you are studying a short course, summer school or language course that will last less than 90 days. If you are planning to stay in-country for longer than 90 days, for instance on a bachelor’s or masters degree, you will need to obtain a student visa instead, and ETIAS will not apply to you. Take a look at our complete guide to international study visas for more information about this process.
What is the purpose of ETIAS?
The main purpose of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is to enhance the security and efficiency of travel to the Schengen Area while maintaining visa-free access for eligible countries. By pre-screening you before you arrive at the border, ETIAS aims to achieve several key objectives:
- Strengthen security
- Simplify border procedures
- Ensure safer visa-free travel
- Protect public health
- Enhance EU cooperation and data sharing
Will I need to apply to ETIAS?
ETIAS will be required for travellers from countries that currently have visa-free access to the Schengen Area. There are more than 60 countries included, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. The system applies to short-term visits for purposes such as tourism, business, transit, or medical treatment lasting up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Certain groups are exempt from ETIAS requirements. Citizens of EU member states and Schengen Area countries do not need ETIAS authorisation. Similarly, if you require a Schengen visa, or hold a long-term visa or residency permit issued by Schengen countries, you are not subject to ETIAS for your journeys within the region.
You can see the full list of countries on the official European Union website.
How do I apply?
Applying for ETIAS is a straightforward process that can be completed online. Here’s what you need to do:
- Prepare the necessary documents – you will need a valid biometric passport (e-passport) from a visa-exempt country. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended stay in the Schengen Area.
- Complete the application form – you will need to access the ETIAS application portal and provide information about yourself. This will include your full name, date of birth and nationality, as well as your passport information and travel details.
- Pay the application fee – after you have completed the form, you will need to pay the €7 application fee. This does not apply if you are under 18 or over 70.
- Submit and wait for approval – once you have submitted your application, ETIAS will automatically begin cross-checking your information against EU security databases. Most applications will be approved within minutes, however it can take up to 30 days.
- Receive your ETIAS authorisation – if you are approved, your ETIAS authorisation is electronically linked to your passport. You will also receive a confirmation email, which you should keep for your records. You shouldn’t need to provide any physical documents when travelling.
Remember that you should always be aware of the travel regulations that apply to you when planning to study abroad. Take time to research whether you need to obtain travel authorisation or a student visa, as this will ensure that you have plenty of time to apply for these documents.
