Non-EU/EEA students typically require a residence permit to study in Sweden for a course longer than three months. The process begins with securing a place at a Swedish university. Following acceptance, students must demonstrate they have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses for the duration of their stay, which the Swedish Migration Agency currently estimates at SEK 8,514 per month.

After fulfilling the financial requirement, the next step involves applying for a residence permit for studies through the Swedish Migration Agency’s website. The application should include:

  • A letter of acceptance from the Swedish university confirming enrolment in a full-time course
  • Evidence of comprehensive health insurance if your study period is less than one year
  • Proof of financial means to support yourself for the duration of your studies
  • A valid passport and passport-sized photographs

The application fee for a residence permit for studies is SEK 1,500 for adults. It is crucial to apply as soon as you have received your acceptance letter, as processing times can vary.

Upon arrival in Sweden, students do not need to register with the local police but should ensure their residence permit card is in order, which is usually issued before arrival. For those staying longer than one year, registering with the Swedish Population Register to obtain a personal identity number is recommended, which simplifies access to various services.

Sweden Student Visa Work Regulations

Sweden offers substantial opportunities for international students to work while studying. Students with a valid residence permit for studies are allowed to work alongside their studies without any specific hour limits. This provision enables students to gain valuable work experience, improve their Swedish language skills, and manage their living expenses.

Following the completion of their studies, graduates can apply for an extension of their residence permit for up to 12 months to look for work or start a business in Sweden. This period provides a valuable opportunity for students to transition from academic to professional life within the country.
