Slovakia student visa process and fees

Non-EU/EEA students planning to study in Slovakia for longer than 90 days will generally need to obtain the appropriate permission to enter Slovakia and apply for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of study. The exact process depends on the applicant’s nationality and whether a National Visa (Type D) is required before travelling.

Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to cover their tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses throughout their studies. The required amount is determined by the Slovak authorities and may change over time.

In order to obtain a temporary residence permit, you need to submit the application at the Slovak embassy or consulate in your home country, providing the following documents:

  • An acceptance letter from the Slovak educational institution confirming your enrollment in a full-time course
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of your stay
  • A valid health insurance policy
  • A certificate of no criminal record from your home country
  • A valid passport and recent passport-sized photographs

The application fee for a temporary residence permit for study purposes is approximately €165. It’s important to apply well in advance of your intended start date, as processing times can vary.

Upon arrival in Slovakia, students may need to register their residence with the local Foreign Police Department within three working days from their entry into the country.

Slovakia student visa work regulations

Slovakia offers international students the opportunity to work part-time during their studies. Students with a valid temporary residence permit for the purpose of study are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week. This provision enables students to gain practical work experience, improve their language skills, and support themselves financially during their studies.

After completing their studies, graduates can explore opportunities to extend their stay in Slovakia by finding employment or engaging in further education, subject to the country’s immigration policies at that time.
