Romania, with its picturesque landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for international students. The country’s universities offer a diverse range of programs recognised for their academic rigour, particularly in fields like engineering, medicine, and arts.

Beyond its educational appeal, Romania is known for its hospitable people, historic castles, and dynamic student life, making it an attractive option for students seeking a unique educational experience in Eastern Europe.

Romania student visa process and fees

Non-EU/EEA students who plan to study in Romania for more than 90 days generally need a long-stay visa (D/SD) for study purposes. Before applying for the visa, students must usually obtain an acceptance letter issued through the Romanian education authorities and complete the required admission procedures with their university.

Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves during their studies, in addition to covering tuition fees and accommodation costs. The required amount is determined by Romanian authorities and may change over time.

In order to obtain a student visa, you will need to submit the application at the nearest Romanian embassy or consulate in your home country, providing the following documents:

  • A letter of acceptance for studies issued through the Romanian education authorities
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of your stay
  • A valid health insurance policy for the duration of your stay
  • A criminal record certificate or another document of the same legal value
  • A valid passport and recent passport-sized photographs

The visa application fee for a long-term D visa is around €120. It’s crucial to apply well in advance of your intended start date, as visa processing times can vary.

After arriving in Romania, non-EU/EEA students must apply for a residence permit with the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) before their visa expires. The residence permit is generally issued for the duration of the study period and must be renewed when required.

Romania student visa work regulations

International students holding a valid residence permit for study purposes may work part-time in Romania without a separate work permit, subject to Romanian employment regulations. Students are generally permitted to work up to four hours per day while studying.

After completing their studies, graduates may be able to remain in Romania by obtaining an appropriate residence status for employment, further education, or other eligible activities, provided they meet the relevant immigration requirements.
